OpportunityThe University of Central Florida College of Medicine
(UCF-COM) is seeking a full-time faculty member to join the team
leading the design, growth and management of clinical and
translational research at the College and in collaboration with our
partner institutions. The position will be academically housed in
the Department of Medicine, and the research support activities
will be based in the College's Office of the Associate Dean for
Research. The position is a non-tenure track, assistant professor
of medicine appointment.The UCF-COM has successfully grown
multi-disciplinary basic research and our strategic plan now
focuses on substantial expansion of investigator-initiated and
sponsored human research. In that growth of translation research is
a key goal, we seek a candidate with a background in basic science
research to assist our wet-lab research Ph.D. faculty in clinical
investigations. It is essential that the successful candidate have
demonstrable experience in designing, funding, and operationalizing
clinical research that met the regulatory requirements of NIH or
equivalent funding agencies. There must also be a track record of
assisting research faculty collaborate with other state, federal
and private institutions. Demonstrable expertise in instructing
faculty for their research career development (e.g., being a
lecturer for clinical research topics) is necessary.The qualified
applicant will have a Ph.D. in a fundamental science with the
requisite experience and training to be a critical resource for
faculty and COM learners (e.g., medical students and residents in
our undergraduate and graduate medical education programs)
regarding research design, methods, statistical analysis, abstract
and manuscript preparation, program evaluation, and grant writing.
While the primary role will be to function as a resource,
navigator, facilitator, teacher and guide, it does not exclude the
possibility of the successful applicant being a member of select
research investigation teams (e.g., as a co-investigator). The
successful applicant must have experience in clinical and
translational research, medical education, and grant writing. This
individual must have the scientific knowledge and ability to read
and understand research proposals from all disease areas and
understand what is required to move a project forward along the
research spectrum from early discovery to first-in-human studies
and beyond. The applicant will have the ability to assess basic
science as well as clinical proposals. In addition, the applicant
will be responsible for the management of peer-review groups to
evaluate research proposals based on their scientific merit.The
position will serve as a liaison to develop collaborative
relationships and partnerships with key external stakeholders
(e.g., VA Medical Centers, Nemours Children's Health, HCA
Healthcare) so as to include project leaders, research directors,
study teams, investigators, and act as a resource to
inter-institutional basic science and clinical research teams.
Based on the extent of collaborations with the Orlando VA Medical
Center it is possible that this position may become dual-pay with
the VA. The applicant will be expected to facilitate, moderate and
present at research seminars, study groups and/or other scholarly
conferences.Applicants must demonstrate that they have worked
independently in planning, organizing, and conducting biomedical
research, or health-related research; served effectively in
research program administration in these fields; and acquiring an
understanding of the organizations in which health research is
conducted. This experience may be gained as a principal
investigator of a grant or contract or may otherwise be gained
through active involvement in initiating research projects,
developing protocols, conducting studies, documenting findings,
interpreting results in a published study, supervising staff, and
managing the budget.The successful applicant must possess the
attributes of:
- Excellent collaborative skills with demonstrated experience in
grant proposal development and manuscript writing.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; experience in
supervising support staff and processes.
- Expertise and proficiency in report writing as well as
performing literature reviews.The successful candidate will need
the skillsets and expertise to:
- Advance the design, implementation, and operationalization of
fundamental, translational and clinical research for both
investigator-initiated studies and sponsored studies.
- Collaborate with the Manager of Clinical Research to advance
research studies.
- Support faculty in increasing research funding/grants, both
internal & external.
- Participate in the development and operationalization of
research projects for residents and fellows in our COM graduate
medical education programs.
- Support the residency programs to develop, increase, and
improve quality and quantity of resident scholarship.
- Serve as a member of the UCF Institutional Biosafety
Committee.
- Work with the UCF COM Faculty Affairs and Development team in
advancing research development opportunities.
- Build collaborative research efforts with UCF healthcare
partners as well as among UCF departments at COM and other
colleges.Minimum Qualifications:To be considered, applicants are
required to have a Ph.D. in a fundamental science or closely
health-related field from an accredited institution and must have
at least 5 years of experience in liaising scientific
collaborations/partnerships, project management, budgetary matters,
and grant writing/development. The candidate's scholarly background
and experience must be commensurate with the faculty rank of
assistant professor of medicine.Preferred Qualifications:There is
the strong preference that the applicant will have a Ph.D. in an
area of existing clinical and/or research expertise in the COM
(e.g., neurobiology/neuroscience, microbiology, oncology) with more
than 5 years of experience in liaising scientific
collaborations/partnerships, project management, grant
writing/development, and instructing on these topics. Experience
working in an NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Sciences
Institute (CTSI) within a medical school is strongly preferred.
Experience serving in program management of internal pilot funding
mechanisms is preferred. A history of organizing grant reviews with
NIH scientific review officers is also preferred.Additional
