The Vice President - Head of Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR) is responsible for setting the strategic direction and operational execution of Optum Life Sciences' Health Economic and Outcomes Research (Incl. Value Based Services) Division. -This role will lead and manage all aspects of business development, research oversight, client delivery, and operations. The Vice President will have primary oversight of the four operational teams within HEOR including: the research scientists, the project managers, the medical writers, and the analytics team. -

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Optimizing the Client Experience

    • Leads work relating to the HEOR business areas (retrospective, primary data collection, analytics) to a high standard which meets or exceeds client expectations
    • Leads the design of retrospective and observational research studies in concert with our clients
    • Represents OptumInsight HEOR during the business development stages of a project; oversees the proposal development process and contributes to proposals; delivers methods workshops, capabilities presentations and proposal defense presentations; and presents study results to clients and stakeholders
    • Remains current on industry, client and competitive trends and directions in order to anticipate and identify new business challenges and issues for HEOR clients
    • Develops business plans and formulates strategies that meet the needs of HEOR clients
    • Continues to strengthen technical expertise through on the job experience, participation in conferences and symposiums and other forums for professional knowledge sharing
    • Communicates project status, timelines, end product and analysis results, and value messages to internal (leadership team) and external customers or partners
    • Coordinates teams to deliver on assigned goals, and to assess performance

    • Fostering Employee Engagement

      • Builds a strong team where the right people are in the right roles, united around common goals for the delivery of exceptional results
      • Provides clear expectations of staff roles and evaluates and rewards stellar performance
      • Manages staff resources
      • Supervises, mentors, and develops staff to support the growth and success of the HEOR team now and for the future
      • Works with and/or leads OptumInsight interdepartmental teams
      • Demonstrates resiliency in the face of unanticipated changes and/or challenges facing the business

      • Supporting Innovation to Grow the Business

        • Drives the strategic vision and growth strategy of HEOR in relationship to OptumInsight Life Sciences goals
        • Leads initiatives to improve quality and efficiency, identifies opportunities for new service offerings, and identifies new clients for HEOR
        • Presents in public forums on key topics of expertise in the HEOR/RWE space -

        • Achieving Financial Targets

          • Owns P&L responsibility for HEOR. -Plans, directs, and controls the resources and efforts of HEOR teams, including the development and implementation of the departmental hiring plan
          • Ensures pricing strategies and manages business unit costs to maximize margins, oversees department and project pipeline forecasting
          • Reviews analysis for resources (people, funding, materials, support) in conjunction with HEOR Leaders, to recommend changes that will improve the Division's operational performance
          • Evaluates business unit performance against plan to review successes and shortfalls. Develops and implements strategies to address areas of concern

            Required Qualifications:

            • Master's Degree with 15+ years of related experience OR PhD, Pharm D, or MD with 10+ years of related experience -
            • 10+ years of demonstrated knowledge and skills in the areas of medical affairs and R & D in the pharmaceutical biotech industry
            • 5 + years of experience managing and leading a large team of on-shore and off-shore resources
            • P&L experience -
            • Expertise in methodologies and study designs that produce clinically and economically relevant value information in both the development and post-launch time period
            • Willing to travel 25+%

                Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, or New York City Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $134,200 to $257,700. The salary range for Connecticut/Nevada/New York City residents is $134,200 to $257,700.
