The Registered Nurse, Prevention and Management of Disruptive Behavior (PMDB) Program Educator is located at the Mental Health Service and will report directly to to the PMDB Program Manager within the Workplace Violence Prevention Program (WVPP), which reports to the Mental Health Service Chief or designee.

The Prevention and Management of Disruptive Behavior (PMDB) Program Educator is a registered professional nurse who provides formal/informal/virtual instruction to clinicians and support staff on how to safely and effectively prevent and manage all types of patient generated disruptive behaviors. The PMDB Program Educator trains staff to identify disruptive situations, recognize the signs that a disruptive situation could escalate into a violent situation and intervene appropriately to reduce risk of injuries to self and others. The PMDB Program Educator is an essential and integral part of the PMDB Program and the overall Workplace Violence Prevention Program (WVPP), which is managed by the Mental Health Service at Orlando VA Healthcare System (OVAHCS).

The PMDB Program Educator serves as a PMDB Facility Trainer and is primarily responsible for teaching all parts of the PMDB core curriculum for the OVAHCS, held on a regularly scheduled weekly basis. Under the supervision of the PMDB Program Manager, the PMDB Program Educator participates in the identification, development, coordination, evaluation, and implementation of all aspects of the PMDB program throughout the OVAHCS. The PMDB Program Educator maintains specialized knowledge of PMDB education and training and provides training and re-training of PMDB skills to all OVAHCS employees.

The PMDB Program Educator has a global understanding of how their area(s) of responsibility supports the system's mission and vision. They are responsible and accountable for the planning, organization, and evaluation of effectiveness related to clinical, informatics, and/or administrative process changes, analyzing issues impeding change, developing corrective actions to expedite change, and assuring optimum utilization of available resources to maintain a climate conducive to quality patient care and employee satisfaction. The PMDB Program Educator functions as a formal and informal educator; serving as a liaison between internal and external customers, supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction, considering the client population, including age and life stages, state of health, race and culture, values, and previous experiences. They influence care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team.

The PMDB Program Educator must continue to maintain PMDB Facility Trainer certification status and attend any required PMDB conferences or trainings to ensure such status. The PMDB Program Educator may obtain National PMDB Master Trainer status. PMDB Program Educators who achieve PMDB Master Trainer certification maintain a close partnership with the National WVPP/PMDB Programs.

The primary duty location for this position is the Orlando VA Medical Center in Lake Nona; however, the incumbent will be expected to travel to all facilities/sites within the OVAHCS catchment area to provide training, which will require obtaining and maintaining approvals for government vehicle usage. Duty hours may vary according to the training needs of the facility, in consultation with the PMDB Program Manager.

The Registered Nurse PMDB Program Educator duties include but not limited to:


  • Implements and complies with local and National directives and policies governing the PMDB and WVPP Programs.
  • Educate staff in recognizing signs and factors of potential danger, strategies for de-escalation, and identifying resources that can directly address individual needs to help improve the quality of Veteran care and reduce overall risk.
  • Seeks guidance from the PMDB Program Manager and the WVPP Manager regarding disruptive individuals in the workplace, behavioral risk and threat management recommendations, and strategies to promote a culture of safety in Veterans Health Administration (VHA).
  • Serve as a local TMS administrator to assist the PMDB Program Manager with ongoing and continuous data-recording and analysis tasks.
  • Function as an Administrator of the Disruptive Behavior Reporting System (DBRS) to assist the WVPP Manager with maintaining data, access, and administrative functions of the DBRS.
