JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for business advisement, technical support, and conformance primarily related to fire protection, life safety, and emergency response matters, by fostering the implementation of the EHS Management System, Global Standards, and associated processes. Responsibilities include management (including quality control) of documents and records, evaluation of fire protection, life safety, and emergency response processes and practices, evaluation of the effectiveness of prescribed controls, communicating objectives, responding to emergent issues and effectively using a range of controls to mitigate risk, reduce incidents, and drive conformance in all areas of fire protection, life safety, and emergency response. Provides contributions to new and re-commissioning projects. Partners with all EHS functional teams to gain understanding and conformance with these elements. Liaise with local fire and emergency response authorities, business EHS teams, and insurance carriers related to fire protection, life safety, and emergency response matters. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Fire Protection and Life Safety: Provide day to day proactive and collaborative technical advice and support regarding fire protection, life safety, and emergency response objectives, planning, and implementation against Global Fire Protection and Emergency Response Standards. Aid in regulatory understanding and interpretation, prescription of controls and systems, conformance processes, and performance indicators/goals. Provide guidance on performance by understanding the causes of nonconformity, control effectiveness, and methods to improve EHS standards and processes. Continually identify hazards, conduct observations, and stop work when there is imminent danger. Participate in Serious Incident investigations, inspections, audits, concerns/near miss evaluations, as requested or based on level of severity.
  • Projects and Special Events: Review projects and special events for conformance to regulation, Global EHS Standards, and permitting triggers. Engage carrier and local authorities in project planning and reviews. Negotiate and gain resolution on all Carrier requirements. Raise awareness to items without resolution timely to both project and EHS leadership teams. Collaborate with project and special event teams on conformance and permit logistics and timing. Ensure that the EHS Design Requirements document along with Global Standards provide clarity for project and special event teams. Obtain and/or maintain all fire and other permits as required for Universal Orlando. Collaborate with project teams and Government Relations when obtaining all permits.
  • Global Operations and Projects: Build relationships as a "trusted advisor" to influence management teams understanding of regulations, process, Standards, and performance expectation. Collaborate with businesses to identify hazards and assess risk on a global footprint. Gain understanding and consensus on resulting residual risk with business leadership and EHS teams. Communicate and monitor controls and outcomes related to fire protection, life safety, and emergency response. Monitor trends and assessment outcomes striving toward achievement of Highly Protected Risk (or equivalent) status at all facilities. Develop Global Standards, Bulletins, trainings and other communications to support understanding, consistency and conformance across the parks.
  • Local Authority and Carrier Support: Liaise with local authorities (primarily at Universal Orlando Resort) to gain consensus and understanding on response processes, unique configurations and operations which need their support, facilitate agency training opportunities and tours, arrange recognition events around holidays and special occasions. Partner and gain agreement with carriers on expectations, applicable standards, assessment schedules, and resulting outcomes. Ensure timely response is given to carriers post assessments, plans review, and other communications needs. Foster and collaborate on agreed plans of action and resolutions on projects, changes and findings. Gain consistency on carrier approach for all facilities regardless of location.
  • Emergency Response: Review processes for each park globally related to EHS matters. Integrate and maintain the UOR EHS on-call processes into facility emergency response and notification processes. Actively respond to and participate in the EHS on-call process as assigned. Arrange for drills and response training to meet regulation and internal expectation while engaging local authorities in the various processes for awareness primarily at Universal Orlando.
  • Performance: Provide guidance to business for the generation of effective annual action plans to mitigate trends and support annual performance objectives. Proactively understand and remain abreast of business performance, have ability to explain and provide reasons for performance both positive and negative, participate routinely in business and EHS meetings to discuss performance information against objectives, provide realistic and effective corrective solutions toward performance improvement. Make suggestions to the EHS Applications teams related to forecasting dashboards and reports to support performance improvements.
  • Understands and actively participates in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. EDUCATION: Bachelor s degree: Bachelor s Degree in Safety Engineering/Management, Fire Safety, or Fire Department Training Program is preferred EXPERIENCE:
    • 7+ years: required: Managed all or a portion of a fire protection and/or emergency response function within a large organization, conducted investigations, risk assessments, managed subordinates, interacted with local regulatory authorities, engaged in permitting activities, issued directives and standards, developed and compiled metrics and KPI s, strategic plans, capital improvement, and operating budgets.
    • Operational Experience: 5+ years/expert in at least three fire protection and emergency response elements (standards development, training, permitting, management system implementing, high risk/varied response activities, insurance carrier liaison, plans review, global fire protection). At 3 years and solid working knowledge in at least two additional elements. Experience should be in a diverse and changing, rapid pace environment. Theme park and international experience preferred. CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Certified Safety Professional, or other equivalent certification preferred ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization s policies and applicable laws.
