UnitedHealth Group Center for Health Care Research, based in
Minneapolis and Washington, D.C., seeks an outstanding and
experienced Principal Researcher to serve on a high-performing,
close-knit team of innovative health care researchers and analysts
working within a mission-driven, results-oriented, restless, and
highly successful Enterprise. The Center's research supports UHG's
commitment to the development of a next-generation health system in
a socially conscious manner and the implementation of actionable,
practical, and timely policy and market solutions that can achieve
universal coverage, affordability, better experiences for patients
and physicians, and improved health outcomes. The successful
candidate will possess the highest level of analytic, strategic
thinking, and communication skills (both oral and written); deep
and broad knowledge of health care policy and markets; passion for
health care transformation; and excellent judgment. The successful
candidate will help lead the development and execution of a robust
research agenda, including publishing research that advance
business objectives, and manage high-profile partnerships with
prominent researchers at leading universities. - You'll enjoy the

take on some tough challenges. Primary Responsibilities: The
successful candidate will have a broad range of strategic and
operational responsibilities related to leading and publishing
research deliverables, building and maintaining key relationships
and public visibility of the Enterprise, and internal leadership
and management.
- Conceptualizing, developing, advancing, delivering, and
publishing research - both internally generated research and
research produced in collaboration with external academic
partners
- Leading and collaborating on discrete research projects from
the early stages of development through project completion
- Conceptualizing, drafting, developing, and producing distinct,
timely, and incisive research on pressing health care issues
- Partnering with UHG Communications leaders on the release of
UHG-branded deliverables
- Designing, executing, and managing research and analysis
- Developing forecasts to assess the potential economic,
budgetary, and/or clinical impacts of advances in health care
delivery, policy reforms, and market shifts
- Working with senior business executives, clinical leaders, and
subject matter experts throughout UHG to identify and manage the
development of research initiatives that leverage the Enterprise's
distinctive data insights, analytic assets, technology and its
population health, benefit, provider, and care delivery models
- Collaborating with external research partners on all aspects of
research studies, from conceptualization to publishing
- Translating research and providing policy, and strategic
insights to UHG leadership in areas including health care spending
and financing issues, delivery system reforms, clinical practice
advancements, and health information and financial technology
innovation in private markets and public programs
- Building and maintaining key relationships and public
visibility of the Enterprise
- Building internal relationships and collaborating with
Enterprise leadership to inform, execute, and elevate UHG research
deliverables; integrating expertise from across UHG; and ensuring
the Center's work aligns to a UHG-wide perspective on key
issues
- Developing, leading, and maintaining external relationships
with industry thought leaders and key stakeholders outside the
Enterprise, including policy experts and researchers, for the
purposes of informing the Center's work and maximizing its
impact
- Representing UHG externally as a prominent liaison and trusted
partner with the health care research community and respected
academic institutions on potential partnership opportunities
- Communicating key research findings to external audiences,
including delivering presentations at conferences, symposiums,
roundtables, and other convenings
- Collaborating on diverse aspects of coordinating the Center's
work and its team
- Anticipating data needs of the future and develop and execute
data strategy for the Center You'll be rewarded and recognized for

in. Required Qualifications:
- PhD or Master's degree in economics, finance, biostatistics,
mathematics, public policy, public administration, public health,
or a related field
- 15+ years of professional experience working for one or more
health care organizations, consulting firms, universities, research
institutions, think tanks, government agencies, or similar
organizations, in a research leadership capacity, including as a
lead author of publications on health care markets, health policy,
and/or health care delivery
- Demonstrated experience managing all aspects of a research
project, both independently and leading a team
- Broad scope of expert knowledge and a deep, nuanced
understanding of health policy and market issues, including a
coherent big-picture vision and the ability to master details at a
granular and technical level/Specific expertise will include:
- Major legislation and market forces that impact the health care
marketplace
- The market for providing health care services, particularly
around the dynamics in technology-enabled solutions and their
impact on the evolving delivery system
- Health care insurance, including Employer-Sponsored Insurance,
Medicare, Medicaid, and the Public Exchanges
- Patterns and emerging issues in health care spending, provider
payment models, care management frameworks, and service delivery
redesign
- Microeconomics and applied behavioral economics in a health
care setting
- Broad and flexible set of key skills and attributes, including
the ability to: construct spreadsheet models, analyze claims data,
and interpret and assess the results of empirical studies;
independently develop and execute reports and presentations;
communicate effectively with business leaders and policy experts,
translating policy-relevant analysis into business-relevant
analysis and vice versa; write effectively, and think strategically
and creatively in a dynamic environment
- Experience utilizing solid oral and written communication
skills and presenting to a range of audiences, including business
executives, academics, policy makers, and the broader public
- Mastery of Word and Excel, and proficient in PowerPoint
Preferred Qualifications:
- Possess higher-level quantitative analytical skills in research
methods and analysis
- Designing methodologically sound research studies
- Administrative databases, including claims, EMR, and registry
data
- Retrospective study designs using secondary data
- Knowledge of SQL, SAS, STATA or similar software products
- Knowledge of, and experience working with, publicly available

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range
for Colorado/Connecticut/Nevada residents is $174,600 to $332,200.
Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to
education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to
