Job Description:


Under general supervision, the Network Engineer IV supports UCF's LAN/WAN infrastructure.

Responsibilities include:



  • Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of situation requires evaluation and judgment per UCF IT / Telecommunications standards and SOPs.


  • Serves as a point of escalation for other team members.


  • Responsible for monitoring the overall network, following standard practices and procedures when analyzing and responding to problems.


  • Interacts with other support service groups to ensure proper escalation during outages or periods of degraded system performance.


  • Responsible for troubleshooting, configuring, and replacing network hardware. Will be assigned network projects as needed, following UCF IT / Telecommunications standards through completion.


  • Maintains the network portions of the UCF IT Knowledge Base.


  • Fourth-level network troubleshooting, requiring advanced knowledge of networking hardware and protocols.


  • Serves as a point of escalation for higher-level requests and projects, assisting junior engineers as needed.


  • Guides junior engineers and assists the manager to coordinate the team during outages or periods of degraded service.


  • Works through trouble tickets and work orders as assigned via work order systems.


  • Plans and evaluates moderately complex existing network systems and makes recommendations for resources required to maintain and/or expand service levels.


  • Performs switch, router, wireless AP, and UPS configurations, installations, troubleshooting, and RMA's.


  • Develops articles for UCF IT Knowledge Base.


  • Monitors overall network health via monitoring tools for issues to correct.


  • Monitors network utilization for excessive and improper usage; provides an analysis of data collected to help determine bottlenecks and abuse.


  • Prepares network status reports; provides analysis of data to aid in the design of upgrades, equipment maintenance costs, and ongoing repairs.


  • When necessary, manages small network deployments and projects.

    $89,076 to Negotiable




    Minimum Qualifications:


    Bachelor's degree and 5 years of relevant experience; or High School Diploma (or equivalent) and 9 years of relevant work experience in lieu of degree.

    • 6+ years of relevant experience.


    • Cisco CCNP.


    • Familiar working in a mixed-vendor environment.


    • Perform as a lead when working with other engineers on the team.

      • This position must be available 24/7 in case of an emergency and may be asked to work during emergency situations including early, late, weekend, holiday hours, and/or university closures such as during a hurricane.


      • Since UCF IT Telecommunications is considered a "mission essential" component of UCF's operational capability.


      • Additionally, a person in this position may be asked to work a flexible schedule that includes non-traditional hours to perform essential job functions that cannot be performed during "normal" business hours.
