The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the College of Arts and Humanities, invites applications for an assistant professor in Arabic. This is a 9-month, tenure-earning position, anticipated to begin August 2019. The successful candidate will teach beginner- and intermediate-level language courses, develop and teach upper-level courses in Arabic and English as needed, build a cohesive Arabic curriculum, and cultivate interdisciplinary programs and collaborations with other departments. There is the potential for expanded administrative duties related to coordinating the Arabic program. Assignment will consist of a 3/2 teaching load, an expectation of service, and a commitment to research and publication required. Position Minimum Qualifications A Ph.D. in modern Arabic literature or linguistics or a related field and native or near-native fluency in Modern Standard Arabic, at least one Arabic dialect, and English. Preferences Preference will be given to candidates who have a teaching and research interest in Arabic language pedagogy. Experience or interest in Arabic in the context of programs in Middle Eastern Studies, Islamic Studies, and/or Middle Eastern minority cultures, and/or comparative religions is also preferred. Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level, including upper-division courses in literature and culture, as well as experience in teaching language at all proficiency levels. Demonstrated excellence in interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and scholarship. Experience in teaching using different modalities (e.g., online and face-to-face courses). Demonstrated potential and/or excellence in research and publications in the candidate's field.
